What kind of life would African slave descendants enjoy today if not for the slave trade? That we may never know but it is clear that our society is still deeply affected by racism in its various forms. Evidence that discrimination and racism are still prevalent can be seen in the correctional system, over-representation, poor health care and so on.
in recent news, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, pretty much unknown to the public before his comments, stated that African-Americans might be better off in slavery rather than anything they’re doing today. Bundy was quoted in the New York Times as saying that blacks ” abort their young children, they out their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton”. Bundy continues, “they didn’t get no more freedom; they got less freedom”. In other words Bundy feels as if African Americans have less freedom than they did during times of slavery. Though Bundy is certainly entitled to his opinion, he crosses the line of just giving his opinion and becomes highly offensive to people of color. It’s definitely difficult to look at this situation and not think they’re millions of people in the United States who feel the same way.
In Bundy’s view this country was better off having African Americans provide free labor so slave masters would make millions. This country was built on the free labor of African Americans yet we face many disadvantages of modern racism. It’s hard to think America as a country will ever look at blacks as simply blacks because not everyone is able to suspend judgement.
