Theater and Anthropology

Theater involves a big part of anthropology because you are becoming another person in another time or place. Play writers understand human emotion and how to increase drama because they want to show drama to an audience. I am from New York City and I go to Broadway a lot to see theater productions and I always enjoy the stories the writers show on stage and how the director makes it come alive. The actors are also a big part because they convey the emotions of the play or musical. Actors have to learn the part and possibly give a little twist to the personality. Actors have to understand everything about the character to make sure the audience understands the story and the relationships. Anthropology is very important because without understanding life then the audience won’t feel any emotion.

There was this post on Anthropology News titled “Anthropology and Theater Very Likely Bedfellows” by Aminata Cairo. She is a professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She wrote about the relationship between anthropology and theater. She also wanted to teach her students to understand the world. She formed a partnership with Professor Kathryn Bentley in the theater department and they used “theater to enhance anthropology and [used] anthropology to enhance theater.” She writes about how the process went and how she and Bentley combined their efforts.
